ACP-EU Water Facility

An allocation of €200 Million from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) has been allocated to the new Water Facility. Two new calls for proposals were launched in February 2010. The ACP-EU Water Facility was set up in 2004, with the principal objective of providing water and basic sanitation to the poor, and to improve water management governance in African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the New Water Facility are:

• To help achieve the water and sanitation Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which are to halve by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation, key prerequisites for reducing child and maternal mortality and combating diseases.

• To contribute to improving water governance and management of water resources and to the sustainable development and maintenance of water infrastructure.

Two calls for proposals have been published at the beginning of 2010:

• Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion for the Millennium Development Goals, published on the 11th of February, 2010.

• Partnerships for Capacity Development in the ACP Water and Sanitation Sector, published on the 24th of February, 2010.

Background Information about the Water facility

Under the 9th European Development Fund (EDF), €497 million was allocated to the first Water Facility. Most of the funds went to 175 projects selected via two calls-for-proposals. As result of these projects, about 14,5 million people are expected to benefit from access to safe water. Of these 14,5 million people, some 3,5 million are also expected to benefit from access to improved sanitation and 10,5 million from hygiene promotion programmes.
