IETC Programme on Water has changed its focus during the last years although very much based on the principles expressed in Agenda 21, the Johannesburg Plan of Action, the Millennium Development Goals and the CSD.
During the first period the focus was on the management of lakes and reservoirs, thereafter the inclusion of the IWRM based on the ecosystem approach brought Integrated Watershed Management while at the same time the cross cutting area of water for cities was always present there. Currently, the focus is more devoted to water and sanitation looking at areas were ESTs could make a difference in terms of their application i.e. wastewater management and freshwater augmentation
based on the 4Rs concept (reduce, recycle, recuperate and recovery).
In terms of wastewater management and sanitation the application of Phytotechnology has become a priority for by looking at low-cost ESTs treatment i.e. natural and artificially constructed wetlands and stabilization ponds, anaerobic baffled reactors (ARB), etc. The main scope is gray water and urban sewage.
On the side of freshwater augmentation the focus is mainly on rainwater harvesting
as an application to increase water availability from rain, which can help
to meet urban water demand and consumption, and also useful for flood control
in urban areas.
