Description
The project purpose is to involve Kyaka communities to conserve the Kagera river basin to achieve sustainable environmental conservation and poverty alleviation. The project will cover two wards of Kyaka and Bugorora respectively. Kagera River has been chocked by water hyacinth which endangers biodiversity life as well as hampering the river navigation. There is currently on going unsustainable cultivation along the river banks which is accompanied by the uncontrolled fire destroying vegetation cover along the river basin. On going farming in the river basin uses a lot of industrial agro-chemicals for fertilization as well as for pesticides and causes a lot of siltation to the water. To address this problem, Obuhangwa Group will strengthen the capacity of the community and selected groups on environmental conservation affairs, enhance collaboration among environmental conservation actors along the borders of Tanzania and Uganda, create community awareness on the effects of degrading Minziro forests and Kagera River to the livelihood of Misenyi community, construct one demonstration pit latrine, and rehabilitate and protect Kagera River basin through planting trees and addressing sustainable farming.
