Description:

The emergency caused by a cyanide spill in the Danube river in January 2000 highlighted the need for tools supporting regional authorities in managing health and environmental risk from industrial sources.

The REHRA project - a joint effort of WHO/Europe and the Ministry for the Environment of Italy - developed a tool enabling national authorities and regional bodies rapidly to rank environment and health risks from a wide variety of active and inactive industrial sources, and plan appropriate measures. The added value of this project lies in its consideration of risks for both the environment and human health, which had been neglected by most rapid risk assessment methods for emergency planning.
