Description
The project seeks to restore and conserve the biodiversity patterns of Mambowodindo and Nana Busua Wetlands through community-based sustainable management actions that will enhance the livelihoods of the people in the area. The main project activities include the production of seedlings (mangrove, cassia siamea, catapar, mahogany, mansonia, edinam, cedrella, black pepper, mangoes and citrus) for planting; cleaning up and restoration of the two lagoons; provision of safe waste disposal systems; rehabilitation of degraded wetlands through enrichment planting and coppice management; management of sacred groves; promotion of agro-forestry; introduction and promotion of soil fertility replenishment systems, and creation of fish refugia.
The project will also develop the environmental management capacity of community groups (women, farmers, fishermen, fish monger traditional Authorities) in environmental restoration, management and monitoring through training; education and awareness campaign; review and enforcement of community environmental bye-laws and production and dissemination of basic facts on the environment to influence policy and decision-making process. A local community based organisation will be formed and strengthened in project management, gender and development, participatory learning approaches. Two environmental clubs (CBO) in biodiversity conservation, wetland management; climate change, participatory monitoring and evaluation will also be formed to promote best enviornmental best practices in the area.
