Current Video Feature: 'Water For Cities'
Rapid Urbanisation is the key feature of the world’s population today. Half the humanity now lives in cities. While you read this sentence, six more people would have joined them.
This is crucial from a water-point-of-view. Cities are highly water-intensive. They house a densely-packed population and industries. The ‘city-lifestyle’ represents an emphasis on continuous growth till it outstrips resources. (Full Feature) |

Current Discussion: Facing the Water-Crisis- ‘More Collective-Action’ or ‘Tapping Individual Vice’?
In a recent article, Alan Nicol, Lyla Mehta and Jeremy Allouche (Institute of Development Studies, UK) analyse the history of the global collective action on water, warning that ”further (collective) failure is not an option.” They are especially critical of the 1992 International Conference on Water and the Environment, Dublin, which promoted the view that water should be recognised as an ‘economic good’ in order to encourage its efficient use and conservation.
Taking a somewhat different stance, journalist James G. Workman fleshes out a framework for water management that places economic value back in water. He proposes a system wherein water utilities convert physical water into virtual credits; allocate equal number of credits to every account (household/industry); and let them trade what they don’t consume with each other. He argues that this is a sustainable system for water conservation since greed, and not virtuous sacrifice, is the core motivation here. (View more and discuss) |
