Zaragoza Office opens December 2007

A United Nations office to support the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005-2015 opened in Zaragoza, Spain, on 5 October 2007. The office will be managed by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and is one of three that are implementing UN-Water associated programmes. The Zaragoza office will focus on communication and advocacy of water and sanitation. The other offices are in Bonn, Germany (capacity building) and in Perugia, Italy (WWAP - World Water Assessment Programme).

Mr. Carlos Fernandez-Jaureguiis the Chair of the office. He has a background in water issues spans 31 years, with wide-ranging experience as research engineer, project officer for developing programmes, and director of an international research centre.

Almost 20 years of Mr. Fernandez-Jauregui's career has been with UNESCO, first as a Regional Hydrologist across Latin America and Caribbean, at the Regional Office for Science and Technology (ROSTLAC) in Montevideo, and the past 6 years in Paris UNESCO HQ as Deputy Coordinator of the UN World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP).

He has been Coordinating of the 24 UN agencies for the preparation of the WWDR 1 and 2 + Case Studies and of activities on water matters for the LAC region.
