Description

The UNFCCC sets an overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge posed by climate change. It recognizes that the climate system is a shared resource whose stability can be affected by industrial and other emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The Convention enjoys near universal membership, with 192 countries having ratified. It entered into force on 21 March 1994.

Under the Convention, governments:

  • Gather and share information on greenhouse gas emissions, national policies and best practices
  • Launch national strategies for addressing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to expected impacts, including the provision of financial and technological support to developing countries
  • Cooperate in preparing for adaptation to the impacts of climate change

Recently, a number of nations have approved an addition to the convention: the Kyoto Protocol. This has more powerful and legally binding measures. The UNFCCC secretariat supports all institutions involved in the climate change process, particularly the COP, the subsidiary bodies and their Bureau.

Mission/Mandate

UNFCCC's mission is to prevent "dangerous" human interference with the climate system.

Work on the ground

  • Korea Water Resources Corporation (KOWACO) small-scale hydroelectric power plants project - KOWACO small-scale hydroelectric power plants project (the Andong-dam, the Seongnam, the Jangheung-dam small scale hydro power plant construction project) comprises 2.64 MW of facility capacity, and power generation of 15,473,000KWh per year for 7 years. Major project participant is KOWACO. This generates electricity as well as socioeconomical benefits in local and national level. Construction of the dams will contribute to effective development of hydroelectric power through utilizing environmental friendly energy sources such as surplus hydroelectric power from the existing dams and waterworks, and also abates global warming. In addition, it will cope with the increasing demand to electricity and reduce fossil fuels imports in Korea.
  • A joint venture project of cogeneration of electricity and hot water using natural gas and biogas produced from on-site wastewater biodigesters - The purpose of the project is to use the energy in the biogas currently removed from process wastewater to produce clean, renewable energy. Currently biogas is removed from wastewater generated in La Costena - Jugomex’s food manufacturing process, via an anaerobic biodigester, and flared to the atmosphere. The project consists of the installation of a cogeneration engine, an electric substation and other facilities for generation of electricity and hot water. The main activities are foundation, installation of equipment, piping, wiring, and start up. The project was completed and operational on March 15, 2005.
  • Methane recovery from waste water generated from wheat straw wash at Paper manufacturing unit of Shreyans Industries Limited (SIL) - The project involves the installation of a high rate Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) digester which captures methane and burns it for generating steam in boilers. SIL’s paper manufacturing unit at Ahmedgarh has an annual installed capacity of 33,000 Metric Tonnes (MT) of paper per annum. Paper manufacturing being a water intensive process produces large quantity of waste water with high percentage of chemical oxygen demand (COD). Waste stream from raw wheat straw wash which is having following characteristics is treated in existing anaerobic lagoons followed by aerobic treatment.
