More than 100 world leaders and thousands of NGOs, government delegates and buisness representatives attended the Summit, which was held 10 years after the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (also known as the first Earth Summit) in Rio de Janeiro. It was therefore also informally nicknamed "Rio+10"

Main Outcomes

Three Main Outcomes:

  1. The Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development, the official declaration made by Heads of State and Government
  2. The Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, negotiated by governments and detailing the action that needs to be taken in specific areas
  3. Type2 Partnership Initiatives, commitments by governments and other stakeholders to a broad range of partnership activities and initiatives, adhering to the Guiding Principles, that will implement sustainable development at the national, regional and international level.
