KM4Dev (Knowledge Management for Development) Forum 2007

Building and Strengthening Knowledge Networks for Development: Issues, Challenges, and Opportunities

The KM4Dev Workshop was organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at its office in Manila, the Philippines, on 8 and 9 February 2007. The forum was organized to provide a venue for Knowledge Management (KM) practitioners, both new and experienced, to interact, network, learn, and share experiences and concerns on creating, disseminating, transferring, and managing knowledge and information.

About

The KM4Dev Forum included not only KM practitioners from the development field but also from the private sector. Thus participants and practitioners from both fields got an opportunity to interact with and learn from each other.

The Forum also included workshops on the latest trends and challenges on knowledge management and presentations from experts in this field. A Poster session allowed each participant / participating organization to present on the knowledge management approach followed by that organisation and to showcase innovative KM methods and tools and successful case-studies.

An interesting thing about the KM4Dev workshop was the Open Space session. In this session, participants were allowed to suggest their own topic for discussion and then organize a discussion group of people who were interested in the same topic. The discussion group discussed the topic in an informal, conversational way and the final conclusion of the discussion was presented to the Forum in the last session. Some of the topics suggested for discussion in the Open Space sesion were: climate change and KM, gender and KM, ICT and KM, Google tools and their impact on KM and many more....

WaterWiki at the KM4Dev Forum

In the poster session, UNDP presented a poster on the approach for connecting people through global/regional/country-level networks. The poster was created using an interesting technique- a drawn visualization of a process. The technique itself could be re-used for capturing meeting outcomes, or as part of facilitation.

WaterWiki was presented along with the poster by UNDP. A pamphlet on WaterWiki (see below) was distributed to the participants and information on WaterWiki as a KM tool was shared with the participants during the Poster Session and in the other sessions as well. WaterWiki was well-received and generated interest as an innovative and impressive KM tool.

Lessons Learnt

  • Knowledge networking is one of the more successful initiatives in many organizations;
  • There are several interesting and innovative KM ideas that work for programming. Some of these include: external networks of practitioners, external community networks, community experience sharing forums, IT tools in support of KM (wikis, network tools, mobile networks, SMS connections), community workshops on setting up knowledge sharing, KM for the national level.
  • There are also several quite simple to use but innovative techniques for KM: story telling, poster sharing, KM audit, open space in virtual setting.
  • Use of Google and other IT Tools was discussed. Some of the tools covered:
