Description
The Ssese Community Development Association (grantee) is a local community based organisation operating in Kalangala district and involved in the promotion of sustainable community conservation activities such as Ecological sanitation. Kalangala district is one of the 82 islands on Lake Victoria whose land area covers 5% while the greater proportion is covered by open water accounting to about 95% of the total area of the district.
The area is characterized with a high water table, sandy and rocky soils which make it difficult to construct pit latrines. Sanitation is very poor as a result of these difficulty physical conditions, thus exposing the local community to risks of morbidity and other environmental related problems.
These problems compound to threaten the survival of the Lake Victoria ecosystem that is a habitat to various biodiversity and a source of economic livelihoods to the local community and the whole East Africa region. The population living on and or around the island and countries neighbouring the lake depend on fishing as a major economic activity.
The GEF focal area addressed is protectio of international waters of the lake victoria ecosystem.
The project is invoved in the promotion of the community water initiatives through ecological sanitation in order to help mitigate some of these environmental problems threatening the lake victoria ecosystem with degradation. The overall objective is to support the establishment of IWRM in the formulation of the MDGs in the area of drinking water and sanitation. Thie aim of the project is to decisively promote the process of water resources management (IWRM) in Togo and to prepare a roadmap and an action plan up until 2015 MDGs for the water and sanitation sector. The project also includes a third component of rehabilitation of modern water points in the Maritime region. This integrated program IWRM-AEPA contributes to a genuine investment plan for the development partners of Togo until 2015 and will allow better coordination of the water - sanitation. The project is implemented with the support of UNDESA.
