Help:Creating a new page
From WaterWiki.net
Creating a new page is SIMPLE. There are multiple ways to start a new page. It's up to you which of the following you pursue.
Contents |
Using Wikilinks
This simply means starting a new page/article by creating a link to it from an existing page. Simply type [[The Title of Your New Page]] into an existing article. "The Title of Your New Page" is just that -- set it to whatever you want to name the page (please try to be specific; e.g. "Kazakhstan NHDR 2003", not just "NHDR").
If you or another user creates a link to a page that does not exist yet, the link will be coloured red. Clicking the red link will take you to the edit page for the newly created article. Once you have selected the page type template to use, simply type your text, click SAVE and the new page will be created. It is as simple as that! Once the page has been created, the previously red link will reappear as blue.
Usually this is the best way to create a new page, because it means that right from the start, the page will be linked from at least one other place on the wiki (and typically you will want to mesh it into other related pages later). If you are creating a new page without creating any link to it, you may need to ask yourself: Does this page really fit in with the water supply and sanitation topics; the overarching theme of Waterwiki? Also, how are you expecting other users to find this page? Normally there is no reason to create a page without first creating a red link to it.
Using the search function
Alternately, if you want to create an article/page without linking to it from another page, type the The Title of Your New Page into the Search box in the left-hand toolbar and click "search". Choose "create a page with this title". You'll come to a dialog, asking what type of page you'd like to create. There are several Layouts you can use for your new page/article; or if no layout seems appropriate choose "Blank Page" which will simply open an empty new page. When you have finished writing the first version of your new article, don't forget to click "Save page". Your new page/article has been created and is available real-time! "Show Preview" enables you to see what the article will look like prior to saving.
Using the URL function
You can also use waterwiki's URL for creating a new page. The URL to an article on waterwiki is:
http://www.waterwiki.net/index.php/ARTICLE or http://www.waterwiki.net/wiki/ARTICLE
If you replace ARTICLE with the name of the page you wish to create, you will be taken to a blank page which indicates that no article of that name exists yet. Clicking the "edit" page tab at the top of the page will take you to the edit page for that article, where you can create the new page by typing your text, and clicking submit.
Categorising/tagging your new (or edited) page
See the help section on Categorising
Protecting your new page
Normally a new wiki page can be edited by other people (that is one of the main ideas of a wiki!) However, a sysop could 'protect' the page, if desired, to prevent normal users from editing it.
Interlinking your new (or edited) page
Linking your article EXTERNALLY
To link your article to external pages on the world wide web, do the following:
- [http://www.example.com LINK TITLE]
-
Use [ and ] to link to webpages outside the WaterWiki, on the WorldWideWeb.
Linking your article INTERNALLY
PLEASE Link your new page to existing articles. One of the main strengths of a Wiki is that information is inter-linked. After creating (or adding to) a (new) page/article, we strongly encourage you to create links to it from pages where you would expect other users searching for information you just entered.
To do so, just open those pages in edit-mode and add [[TITLE OF YOUR NEW PAGE]] at the appropriate place(s). E.g. "Kazakhstan HDR 2003" would deserve a link from the Kazakhstan page.
