"A 5-year action plan of 80 partner organizations to improve water management for healthy rivers and healthy communities. Demonstration of good management in ten basins is supported by the development of tools for financing, governance, empowerment, and information."

Goal: The main goal of the IUCN Water and Nature Initiative is the mainstreaming of an ecosystem approach into catchment policies, planning and management; by developing "...a coherent set of activities that are innovative and targeted at guiding future investments and actions in water resources management and nature conservation."

The principles used are:

  • participative: to empower all stakeholders to participate in water management
  • strategic: to have the maximum possible effect
  • transparent: to have transparency in decision-making and management
  • catalytic: to influence, facilitate and initiate action
  • innovative: to develop knowledge within projects and share it with the widest audience possible

The initietive has 2 main outcomes:

1. Improved management in 10 river basins (Increased livelihood security for water and wetland-dependent communities; Improved utilisation of natural resources; Increased conservation of natural resources; Reduced conflicts between users)
