An odourless, tasteless, colourless compound formed by a combination of hydrogen and oxygen (H2O) which can be in liquid, solid or gas form (Symons et al. 2000).

Water, in a more or less impure state, constitutes rain, oceans, lakes, rivers and other such surface water bodies as well as groundwater. Water is a major constituent of all living matter (Symons et al. 2000).
