Description
Analysis of currently used water quality standards system and setting up of new standards, consistent with the EU requirements; Building capacity for legal analysis and reform; creation of the adequate legal and institutional framework; legal enforcement; improved acces to information; public awareness building; consolidation of national capacity for impact assessment and water quality monitoring and its harmonization with the neighboring countries Romania and Ukraine. Piloting of demonstrational components on water quality monitoring.
The currently used system of WQS, based on an inadequate classification of water bodies, was inherited from the former USSR and imposes technical and economically unrealistic requirements, which actually creates serious barriers for economic development and poverty reduction. There is a lack of comprehensive approach to water quality management. Neighborhood with Romania, an EU accession country, determines the stringent necessity for Moldova to adjust its WQS system but the country has limited resources to respond to this challenge.
