WHO-Definition
The term applies to certain substances or characteristics of drinking water that can affect its acceptance by consumers (taste, odor or color) or interfere with practices for supplying good water. For certain parameters, both aesthetic objectives and health-related guidelines (maximum acceptable concentrations, or MACs) are derived. Where only aesthetic objectives are specified, the values are below those considered to constitute a health hazard.
