Description

The project has addressed two major components:

  1. the restoration and preservation of two natural springs at Delgaskanda and,
  2. to provide families in Delgaskanda village with water through pipeline system from two main store tanks.

Two tanks had been constructed surrounding the main natural springs located at the Delgaskanda. The water from the springs goes to two main store tanks built in the Temple land from there the piped water is distributed to around six hundred families in the area. The major principal behind the project is the water pumping using the gravitational force. The two selected springs are on a mountain above the temple land where the main store tanks are constructed. The water is brought to the main store tanks in the temple land under the gravitational force from the springs in the mountain and from there the water is distributed to six hundred houses through the metered pipe lines. Water is supplied two hours a day in the morning. This water is purely for the drinking purposes. The wells constructed in different in places are used for the bathing and other purposes.

Under the current project it had been proposed to construct ten wells surrounding natural springs in ten villages in Delgaskanda and Daluwalathenne GN Divisions. At the time of the field visit eight wells out of ten proposed had been constructed and the construction of the ninth one in Heepitiya Village had been started. The well in Madagammadda has not yet built. It was observed the villagers use those wells for drinking and bathing purposes. Those wells were built three feet above the ground level thus any contamination from and water run-offs are not likely. These wells provide water for around 1500 families in the area.

The water consumer society takes care of the operational and maintenance of the water distribution system and a substantial tariff is charged for it.

Project Results
  • Ten public wells were constructed in ten villages. More than 1000 people directly receive the benefits of these wells.
  • The main pipe-born water supply scheme provides water to 500 families. This pipeline system goes well into each beneficiary’s house as a result now people do not spend time on collecting water.
  • Appointed members of the CBO manage the water distribution scheme. A meter reader has been appointed by the CBO and is paid from the money paid for the water bill of the consumers.
