Description
The Uruguayan coastal area is of great importance environmentally, socially and economically. In ecological terms it represents a complex mosaic of interlocking ecosystems, including the estuary of the Rio de la Plata and its waterfront and several sites known for their biodiversity of global significance. Scenarios and climate models indicate that the coast of Uruguay is vulnerable. However, most of the policies, programs and projects implemented to date are conducted in a framework that does not consider climate change, and so are at great risk. Climate change is likely to cause a series of negative impacts such as beach erosion and increased saline intrusion, causing heavy losses of coastal resources including the loss of ecosystems of great biodiversity.
This project aims to remove barriers to adaptation to climate change, establishing policies and practices in the field of adaptive land management and coastal management to increase the resilience of ecosystems. This objective will be achieved through the following three outcomes:
- Incorporation of the risks from climate change in policies and regulations related to coastal management;
- Implementation of a pilot scale specific measures for adaptation to climate change in vulnerable ecosystems climate change; #Dissemination and mirror the experiences of adaptation and climate risk management in the coastal area through knowledge management and monitoring and evaluation systems.
