Description
The project objective is to contribute to sustainable control of water hyacinth in Lake Victoria and other water bodies in Speke Gulf portion of Lake Victoria Basin by using physical and biological control agents.
Water hyacinth has a very serious economic, social, health and environment impacts to the lake Victoria (Nile) basin riparian communities. The impacts of the invasive hyacinth include blockage of fishing grounds, interference of navigation ways, clogging of water intakes, harbour snakes and crocodiles which pose great dangers and risks to communities living close to the lake and whose livelihoods depend on the Lake. The control of water hyacinth is designed to contribute to sustainable control of waterweeds using both physical and biological control agents to the level that it can not cause serious socio-economic and environment menace to the local community.
