Description
The UN recognizes and promotes protection of the rights of Indigenous People (IPs). At the GEF/SGP Global Conference in Istanbul (2005), it was directed that each Country Programme should have at least one project on IPs. This project aims at improving the livelihoods of the Hadzabe by increasing their access to water. The project also aims at empowering them so as to increase their awareness on issues regarding land rights and enabling them to participate in local leadership structures.
The main objectives of the project are:
- To contribute to the improvement of livelihoods of Hadzabe communities through increasing availability of water
- To increase their awareness on land rights and governance issues with the view to enabling them to participate in local leadership structures.
The project will also work with the Hadzabe Survical Council and savings groups, village Councils to ensure the demarcation and warmness on the rights in land use to resolve conflicts of resources uses and ensure proper management of water resources and equitable use amongst different needs including livectock and wild animals. Representative of each water user group together with community leaders shall be trained in water management, wells repair and maintenance of the water systems. Water User Groups will be sensitised to form water committee which will run water funds for sustainability of the systems. Community members through community resources persons will be trained in water sanitation and hygiene.
