Description
IFAD's goal is to empower poor rural women and men in developing countries to achieve higher incomes and improved food security. IFAD aims to ensure poor rural people have better access to, and the skills and organization they need to take advantage of:
- Natural resources, especially secure access to land and water, and improved natural resource management and conservation practices
- Improved agricultural technologies and effective production services
- A broad range of financial services
- Transparent and competitive markets for agricultural inputs and produce
- Opportunities for rural off-farm employment and enterprise development
- Local and national policy and programming processes
IFAD is committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals, in particular the target to halve the proportion of hungry and extremely poor people by 2015.
Mission/Mandate
IFAD's mission is to enable poor rural people to overcome poverty. IFAD’s mandate focuses on three strategic objectives:
- strengthening the capacity of the rural poor and their organizations
- improving equitable access to productive natural resources and technology
- increasing access to financial services and markets

Work on the ground
Selected Projects and programmes
Africa
- Oasis Sustainable Development Project (Mauritiana) - an 8yr project aiming to reduce, in a sustainable manner, the high incidence of poverty among rural populations in the five oasis regions.
- Community-Based Agriculture and Rural Development Programme (Nigeria) - This programme has been implemented in 8 northern states where poverty is rife, targeting large sections of the rural population, especially those whose main activities relate to agriculture: women, landless people, nomadic pastoralists, and small-scale farmers or those with only marginal lands. It is designed to empower these groups to participate in development activities.
- Water Supply and Health Project in Marginal Areas- Belgian Survival Fund (Tnazania) - this project is highly sustainable. Water user committees decide what type of water pumps and sanitation the villages need and what they can afford. They establish small fees to cover maintenance costs and receive training so they will know how to repair the pumps, and families pay into a health fund that covers the salaries of the health workers and the cost of medicines. As a result, the community is able to sustain the improvements being made, long after IFAD have left the scene.
Asia and Pacific
- Northern Mindanao Community Initiatives and Resource Management Project (Philippines) - One aim of this project is to develop replicable systems of improved agriculture and natural resource management.
- North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project for Upland Areas (India) - The overall objective is to help the poorest rural people in several hill districts in the region improve their livelihoods through environmentally sound management of their resource base.
Latin America and Caribbean
- Community Development Project for the Rio Gaviao Region (Brazil) - the project aims to raise incomes and improve living conditions, especially nutritional intake, for poor rural communities, as part of an environmentally sustainable development strategy.
