Description

The International Water Association is a global network of water professionals, spanning the continuum between research and practice and all facets of the water cycle. There are 10,000 individual and 400 corporate members, spread across 130 countries. It is a non-profit organisation aiming:

  • to promote the art and science of water management for the public benefit, particularly, but not exclusively, by the encouragement of education, training, study and research in water management and the publication of the useful results of such research;
  • to advance education of members of the public in the science and practice of water management; and
  • to promote and enable the development and direct provision of water management schemes worldwide for the public benefit,

where "water management" means the establishing, maintaining and securing the supply of safe and sustainable water supplies, stormwater systems and wastewater treatment and disposal systems.

To achieve these overarching aims, specialist groups are used as an exceptionally effective means of international networking, sharing information and skills and making good professional and business contacts. Water and sanitation relevant specialist groups include:

  • Groundwater restoration and management group
  • Resources Orientated Sanitation
  • Sanitation and Water Management in Developing Countries
  • Sustainability in the Water Sector
  • Water Reuse
  • Watershed and River Basin Management

Mission/Mandate

IWA's mission is to create and foster a global network of leading-edge water professionals through the provision of services and products to members, including conferences, publications and support for member groups. In addition, to represent the views of members in international forums and to project key messages to the sector at large, aimed at advancing best practice in sustainable water management.

Information Resources/Tools/Materials

Statistics

  • Water and Sanitation Statistics:a review and commentary on available datasets - Access to reliable data sets at the right time is often a time consuming, and at times, frustrating task. The motivation to compile the following data sources, and to provide a short commentary on each, comes from the need expressed by IWA members to have access to quality data on water and sanitation for use in their own work and research.
