Description

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. In more than five decades, the agency has helped an estimated 50 million people restart their lives. Today, a staff of around 6,300 people in more than 110 countries continues to help 32.9 million persons.

UNHCR views access to water as a basic Human Right for Refugees. In a refugee context, it is very often the key to life or death for people who have had to flee their homes from war and persecution.

Mission/Mandate

UNHCR is mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international action for the worldwide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. It's primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. In its efforts to achieve this objective, it strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, and to return home voluntarily. By assisting refugees to return to their own country or to settle permanently in another country, UNHCR also seeks lasting solutions to their plight.

Databases

  • UNHCR Statistical Online Population Database - UNHCR seeks to contribute to informed decision-making and public debate by providing accurate, relevant and up-to-date statistics. As such, the Statistical Online Population Database provides data and trends on the "Population of concern to UNHCR": refugees, asylum-seekers, returned refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) protected/assisted by UNHCR, returned IDPs, stateless persons, and others of concern to UNHCR, in more than 150 countries. In a single electronic platform, UNHCR’s Statistical Online Population Database is bringing together for analysis and comparison standardized data on UNHCR’s population of concern at country, regional, and global levels.

Publications

  • UNHCR's Strategic Plan for Water and Sanitation 2008-2012 - UNHCR’s Strategic Plan for Water and Sanitation (2008-2012) outlines the overall objectives and main strategies to address Water and Sanitation (WatSan) within the context of UNHCR’s mandate to protect refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other persons of concern (PoCs). The Strategic Plan aims to complement the UNHCR Standards and Indicators specific to the WatSan sectors (UNHCR’s Standard and Indicators[S&I] Handbook, 2006), the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations Humanitarian Reform Initiative (HRI), the internationally recognised right to adequate water, and other global commitments and processes in the WatSan sectors. This Strategic Plan takes into account the need for close coordination among the essential service sectors of UNHCR including protection, community services, health, nutrition, food security, shelter, HIV/AIDS, environment and education. These linkages will ensure a comprehensive and integrated approach across technical sectors covered by UNHCR’s Public Health and HIV Section aswell as other divisions within UNHCR.

Work on the ground

  • UNHCR's Water Activities in Afghanistan - UNHCR’s water activities are community-based and benefit all Afghans, returnees as well as the local population. Complementing the Government’s efforts in the water sector, UNHCR targets provinces of high or potential return, as well as the drought-affected areas. In the years 2002-2004, a total of 8,119 water points have been completed under UNHCR’s water programme - jointly or in co-operation with MRRD. It is estimated that these interventions benefit over 1.1 million Afghans.
