Description

The project development objective is to improve irrigation service delivery on a sustainable basis that will contribute to increased agricultural productivity among irrigation farmers. This will be achieved through further development of water users associations (WUAs) and rehabilitation and modernization of irrigation and drainage infrastructure. The project will have three components:

1. Water User Association strengthening;
2. Infrastructure rehabilitation and modernization; and
3. Project management.

The project will be implemented country-wide and will target some 500 WUAs with training, and approximately 29 WUAs (commanding about 5 1,000 ha), that have qualified for assistance according to a number of selection criteria, with rehabilitation and modernization of the irrigation and drainage infrastructure under their management. The project is expected to have a five-year duration, starting around January 2008.
