Description
The global objective of the “Regional Environment Programme in five Central Asian countries” programme is to address the sustainability of the environment in Central Asia and to create a positive impact on the socio-economic wellbeing of the populations, by strengthening the cross border cooperation on the use and management of transboundary aquifers, and thus diminishing some of the tensions related to competition in the allocation of surface water resources.
For the 2 projects adopted in 2008, the specific objectives are as follows:
- The formulation, development and adoption of joint measures for the sustainable use and management of transboundary aquifers in the context of the principles of IWRM. The measures will be based on, a more detailed assessment of the 18 aquifer bodies, identified in all five countries, in the 2007 UNECE regional inventory, on filling gaps in data and information, and formulation of sound management policies, aimed at poverty alleviation and socio-economic development in the beneficiary countries.
- The development of strategic plans for the Ferghana Valley that integrate transboundary aquifers (in the three countries) into conjunctive use of water resources, leading to improved water and land management and aimed at protection of livelihoods of the local communities.
